Words are powerful.
Adoptee is a word not found in the dictionary. Spell check always tells me that I want adaptee instead, which does, on some level, seem appropriate.
Bastard is thrown about in everyday language, but is often used negatively, or in a derogatory way, though the dictionary definition is: a person born of unmarried parents; an illegitimate child.
What are your thoughts and reactions to seeing this picture, as they say, “a picture is worth a thousand words”?
I am, in the literal sense, a bastard child. I was the result of a one night stand and I have a birth certificate that is falsified and has another man’s name on it, not my fathers. Words do hurt, but I’ve also never had anyone say that word to me in a derogatory manner so it’s hard to say what my feelings towards it are. What I will say though, is that even though I may be an illegitimate child, it does not change who I am or how I will live my life. Those are my decisions and are not based of the decisions of my parents.
thanks for stopping by!
did you know that they used to stamp legitimate/illegitmate on birth certificates? it was one of the first reasons for ‘sealed birth certificates’ for adoptees…to try and erase the stigma of being a ‘bastard’
