Words are powerful.

Adoptee is a word not found in the dictionary. Spell check always tells me that I want adaptee instead, which does, on some level, seem appropriate.

Bastard is thrown about in everyday language, but is often used negatively, or in a derogatory way, though the dictionary definition is: a person born of unmarried parents; an illegitimate child.

What are your thoughts and reactions to seeing this picture, as they say, “a picture is worth a thousand words”?

  1. I am, in the literal sense, a bastard child. I was the result of a one night stand and I have a birth certificate that is falsified and has another man’s name on it, not my fathers. Words do hurt, but I’ve also never had anyone say that word to me in a derogatory manner so it’s hard to say what my feelings towards it are. What I will say though, is that even though I may be an illegitimate child, it does not change who I am or how I will live my life. Those are my decisions and are not based of the decisions of my parents.
